Mount Meru Trekking - 5 Days

Overview

Mount Meru sits right in the heart of Arusha National Park, located about 50 miles west of its big brother, Mt. Kilimanjaro. This massive volcano reaches a height of 14,980 feet and offers some of the best views in Tanzania. Many climbers use this trek as an ideal warm-up for Kilimanjaro because the altitude helps your body adjust perfectly.

The route is also geared toward hikers who want to avoid big crowds while facing a challenging ascent. Instead of busy trails, you get quiet paths and a chance to see wildlife up close. Specifically, walking through the forest gives you a unique perspective of the mountain’s scale. Choosing this 5-day adventure is a smart move for any serious trekker.

Afterwards, we will drive you to your accommodation in Moshi so you can settle in comfortably. Your guide will provide a short briefing about the trek once you are ready. Additionally, we will check your kits and all necessary equipment to ensure everything is perfect for the climb. Eventually, you can enjoy a nice dinner and rest before the adventure begins tomorrow.

  • Accommodation: Planet Lodge

Our team will pick you up from the hotel in the morning for a short 45-minute drive to the Arusha National Park Gate. Once the entry formalities are complete, we continue to Momella Gate to officially begin our climb. The trail starts with a steady 2-hour ascent until you reach the beautiful Maio Falls and some lush meadows. After a short rest, the journey continues toward the famous ‘Arched Fig Tree’ that forms a natural arch over the path.

Notably, the scenery changes as you climb higher through the forest. You will reach the Miriakamba Hut after another 1½ to 2 hours of hiking. Since this is your first night on the mountain, it is a great time to relax and enjoy the quiet atmosphere. Overall, this day offers a perfect mix of wildlife spotting and scenic trekking.

The morning begins with a steep track as you climb upwards using the wooden steps. Specifically, the increase in altitude makes the air noticeably cooler, which actually makes the hike feel much easier. After a steady 2-hour walk, you will reach the famous vantage point ‘Mgongo wa Tembo’ (Elephant Back) at 3200m. Once you finish your well-earned break, the vegetation begins to change from thick rainforest into airy bushland.

Eventually, you will arrive at Saddle Hut (3550m) around midday for a relaxing lunch. During the afternoon, you have the option to take a side trip to Little Meru (3820m). Typically, this extra hike takes about an hour and offers wonderful views of Arusha National Park and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Finally, you will return to the hut for an early dinner to prepare for the summit attempt.

Initially, your guide will wake you at 00:30 for some early tea and biscuits. You will then begin the summit attempt at 1:30 AM under the starlit sky. The trail starts with a very steep grade leading from Rhino Point (3800m) up to Cobra Point (4350m). During the final hour of the climb, you will scramble along a rocky ridge between the crater and the inner cliffs.

Eventually, you will reach the summit of Mt. Meru (4565m) just as the sun begins to rise. Notably, the peak offers spectacular views of the Ash Tray and the nearby Mt. Kilimanjaro. After enjoying these breathtaking views, the descent begins back toward Saddle Hut for a short, well-deserved break. Finally, you will continue heading down until you reach Miriakamba Hut (2500m) for the evening.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut

First, you can enjoy a long rest and a hearty breakfast before we begin our final descent. The trail leads us back through the lush forest and open meadows toward Momella Gate.
